At the corner of Nineteenth and Lexington streets in the Mission District stands a site marked by a commemorative plaque, once home to the Lexington Club. Opened in nineteen ninety-seven by Lila Thirkield, the bar became known as a neighborhood institution and a beacon for the city's lesbian and queer community. For eighteen years, it operated as a gathering place that welcomed patrons every night without ever charging a cover fee.
