Intersection for the Arts began in nineteen sixty-five as a merger of three faith-based projects in the Tenderloin, originally operating out of a hotel basement. It emerged as a coalition sponsored by the Glide Foundation, created in part to provide artists who were conscientious objectors to the Vietnam War with opportunities for alternative service. The organization later moved through several San Francisco neighborhoods, including North Beach and the Mission District, before settling at its current address on Market Street.
