Camp Merriam occupies the hills just north of the Lombard Street entrance to the Presidio of San Francisco. Established in July eighteen ninety-eight, this military encampment served as a temporary home for volunteer soldiers from California, Iowa, Kansas, and South Dakota. These troops were gathering in the city to train and prepare for deployment to the Philippines during the Spanish-American War.
