Crissy Field stretches along the San Francisco Bay as a flat, open expanse of grass and restored tidal marsh, bordered by a long, hard-packed promenade. Once a salt marsh used by the Ohlone people, the site was filled in for the nineteen fifteen Panama-Pacific International Exposition. Soon after, the United States Army transformed the flat ground into an Air Coast Defense Station, the first of its kind on the Pacific coast.
