Presidio Parkway Tunnels

The Presidio Parkway Tunnels consist of three cut-and-cover structures that carry Route One hundred one along the northern edge of the Presidio. These tunnels replaced the aging and seismically vulnerable Doyle Drive, a highway viaduct that had severed the Presidio’s historic core from the waterfront since the nineteen thirties. By burying the roadway, planners succeeded in reconnecting the landscape and creating a foundation for public parkland above the traffic.
