Engine House No. 31 (San Francisco, California)

Engine House Number 31, at one thousand eighty-eight Green Street, features a distinctive design of Tudor Revival and Craftsman styles. Built in nineteen oh eight, it is the only San Francisco firehouse of this architectural character. It sits on the Paris Block of Russian Hill, placed here to allow crews to fight fires by traveling downhill. Because returning to the top was difficult for the four-ton steam engines, the station relied on a five-horse team to pull equipment up the steep slope of Leavenworth and Green Streets. A mechanical pulley system also helped move the heavy engines back into the station during the horse-drawn era.
