The Sea Lion Viewing Area is marked by the constant, boisterous barking of hundreds of California sea lions hauled out on a series of floating wooden platforms known as K-Dock. These pinnipeds took over the space in late nineteen eighty-nine, just after the Loma Prieta earthquake, when a seasonal herring run and the removal of local boats provided them with an abundant food source and unexpected, quiet room to rest.
