Orphan Andy’s Restaurant is identifiable by the neon signage and the rows of red vinyl booths and swivel stools that fill its compact interior. Located at the intersection of Seventeenth and Castro Streets, the diner has operated since nineteen seventy-seven. Its owner, Dennis Ziebell, originally arrived in San Francisco by hitchhiking from Nebraska and later managed another local diner, Andy’s Donuts, which had been a frequent stop for Harvey Milk.
