American Indian Cultural District

The American Indian Cultural District is the first city- and state-recognized district of its kind in the United States, established on March thirty-first, twenty-twenty. While its administrative hub sits within the Fort Mason Center at two Marina Boulevard, the district itself is rooted in the Mission District, a neighborhood that has served as a center for Native American political and cultural organizing since the nineteen-fifties. This area preserves a legacy of activism that includes the nineteen-sixty-nine occupation of Alcatraz and the development of essential social services for the urban Native community.
