The Fort Mason Tunnel is defined by its two concrete portals, one tucked near the north end of Van Ness Avenue and the other feeding onto Marina Boulevard at Laguna Street. Built in nineteen fourteen, this single-track railway tunnel burrows directly beneath the hill of Fort Mason. It was originally constructed to allow the State Belt Railroad to bypass the fort, providing a critical rail link for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition held in nineteen fifteen.
