The Lorraine Hansberry Theatre is the longest-running African American theatre company on the West Coast. Founded in nineteen eighty-one by Stanley E. Williams and Quentin Easter, the organization operates today from the Fort Mason Center for Arts and Culture. The theatre company began with fifteen hundred dollars and a commitment to staging works that center the Black experience, including plays by writers like Alice Walker, August Wilson, and its namesake, Lorraine Hansberry.
