Mexican Museum (San Francisco)

The Mexican Museum, or El Museo Mexicano, began with a trip. In nineteen fifty-four, a San Francisco artist named Peter Rodríguez traveled through Mexico and found himself moved by the depth of the artistic expression he encountered there. He returned home with the conviction that his city needed a space to reflect that same culture. By nineteen seventy-five, he turned that vision into reality, opening the museum in the Mission District before it later relocated to the waterfront warehouses of the Fort Mason Center in nineteen eighty-two.
