Audubon House & Tropical Gardens

The Audubon House and Tropical Gardens is marked by its grand, three-story wooden frame structure, built in the American Classic Revival style at the corner of Whitehead and Greene Street. Though it bears the name of the famed naturalist John James Audubon, he never owned or lived in this building. The house was constructed between eighteen forty-six and eighteen forty-nine by Captain John Huling Geiger, a wealthy harbor pilot and master wrecker who chose this prominent site to oversee the bustling waterfront of mid-nineteenth century Key West.
