Turtle Cannery Museum

The Turtle Cannery Museum at two hundred Margaret Street sits directly along the Historic Seaport, recognizable by its weathered wooden exterior and its position beside the remains of concrete pens, or kraals, submerged in the harbor. Built in nineteen eighteen, this structure is the last surviving turtle cannery in the United States. It once served as the central facility for an industry that defined the local economy for decades, where green sea turtles were held in the adjacent water pens before being processed for meat and soup to be shipped to markets across the country and Europe.
