The Kapok Tree

The Kapok tree in Key West is identifiable by its massive, sprawling trunk and thick, woody roots that rise prominently above the ground. Located directly in front of the Monroe County Courthouse at five hundred two Whitehead Street, this specimen has become a local landmark. Its large, buttressed base stands out against the brick facade of the nineteenth-century courthouse, with some visitors describing the root system as large enough to form a small, natural enclosure.
