Key West Lighthouse

The Key West Lighthouse is a slender, white-painted tower topped by a black lantern room. Originally established in eighteen twenty-five, the structure standing at this location was built in eighteen forty-eight, moved inland after a catastrophic hurricane two years earlier leveled the original tower. That eighteen forty-six storm surge swept over the island and destroyed nearly every home in Key West, claiming the lives of fourteen people who had sought shelter inside the first lighthouse.
