Key West Museum of Art & History at the Custom House

The Key West Museum of Art and History is housed in a four-story red brick structure that dominates the waterfront near the harbor. Completed in eighteen ninety-one, its heavy masonry, arched windows, and steep gables follow the Richardsonian Romanesque style common to federal buildings of that era. At the time of its construction, Key West was the wealthiest city per capita in the United States, and this building served as the post office, federal courthouse, and customs office for a port generating more revenue than all other Florida ports combined.
