The Historic Armory at six hundred White Street is defined by its two six-sided pointed turrets and an arched main entrance. Built between nineteen oh one and nineteen oh three, the Italianate-style structure is an unusual wood-frame building, reflecting a period when such facilities were rare in the South due to funding shortages following the Civil War. It originally housed the Monroe County Militia and served as a training center for troops during the first and second World Wars.
