San Carlos Institute

The San Carlos Institute stands on Duval Street with a grand, two-story facade that echoes the architecture of an old Havana mansion. Founded in eighteen seventy-one by Cuban exiles, the center was established to preserve Cuban culture and promote patriotic ideals during the Ten Years’ War. It was sustained for decades by the modest wages of local tobacco workers who saw it as their community home.
