Captain George Carey House

The Captain George Carey House at four hundred ten Caroline Street stands as the second oldest structure in Key West. Built in eighteen thirty-four, it began as a small, two-room cottage belonging to an English merchant captain who operated a wholesale liquor business in the bustling seaport. Ten years later, Captain Carey expanded the house to its current size as a wedding gift for his wife, who had been rescued from a shipwreck off the coast. The local community came to call that event the Wreck of the German Brides, as she and her four sisters were saved and eventually married men living on the island.
