The Key West Cemetery is defined by its rows of whitewashed, above-ground rectangular vaults. These structures exist because the island’s water table is too high to allow for deep burials, and they pack thousands of graves into nineteen acres at the center of Old Town. The site was established in eighteen forty-seven following a massive hurricane that had washed away the city's previous burial grounds, scattering coffins across the island.
