Frederick Douglass Gym, Key west

The Frederick Douglass Gym stands in Bahama Village as the surviving portion of the former Frederick Douglass High School. This gymnasium is a long-standing fixture of the neighborhood, identified by its historic connection to the educational system that served Key West's Black community during the era of segregation. The school property, which dates back to eighteen eighty-four, functioned as a center for learning until nineteen sixty-five, when Douglass students transitioned into the desegregated Key West High School.
