A large Atlantic goliath grouper hangs above the entrance to Captain Tony’s Saloon on Greene Street. This building, constructed in eighteen fifty-two, served as the city morgue and an icehouse before becoming a storied gathering place. Visitors often spot a tree growing through the center of the bar, which local legend identifies as a former hanging tree used for executions.
