Bethel A.M.E. Church

The Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church occupies the corner of Truman Avenue and Thomas Street, identifiable by its masonry walls and the twin towers that rise at the front of the structure. Organized in eighteen seventy by the Reverend Long, the congregation originally gathered in a wooden building on Duval Street. That early site served the community for decades until a hurricane destroyed the sanctuary in nineteen oh nine.
