Savannah Stone Stairs Of Death

The Stone Stairs of Death are a set of thirty-three steep, narrow steps that provide a direct connection between the high bluff of Bay Street and the historic waterfront of River Street. These stairs were likely constructed in the eighteenth century to help laborers and traders navigate the forty-foot vertical drop between the city's upper levels and the port area below. Because the treads are uneven and become treacherous in rainy weather, they earned their grim nickname from generations of locals and visitors.
