The Independent Presbyterian Church of Savannah

The Independent Presbyterian Church rises at the corner of Bull Street and Oglethorpe Avenue, anchored by a tall white steeple that stretches two hundred twenty-seven feet toward the sky. Founded in seventeen fifty-five, this congregation stands as the mother church of Georgia Presbyterianism. The current structure, completed in eighteen ninety-one, was built after a fire destroyed the previous eighteen nineteen sanctuary. Boston architect William Gibbons Preston directed the reconstruction, meticulously following the plan of the earlier building to recreate its Federal-style architecture.
