Old Harbor Light

The Old Harbor Light in Emmet Park appears as a slender, dark green cast iron shaft that reaches twenty-five feet into the air. Built by the federal government in eighteen fifty-eight, this structure functioned as a rear range light for the Fig Island Lighthouse. Its gas-lit beam was designed to guide incoming ships safely past six British vessels that had been scuttled in the Savannah River in seventeen seventy-nine to block French and American warships during the Revolutionary War.
