Savannah's Waterfront

landmark

Savannah’s waterfront is defined by a forty-foot change in elevation, where the city rests on a high bluff overlooking the river. This steep drop shaped the area's unique layout of stone-paved ramps and iron walkways connecting the bluff to the river level. The cobblestones under your feet were once ship ballast, brought from across the world to keep empty vessels heavy during their Atlantic crossings before being discarded here to pave the slopes.
