The Telfair Academy is identifiable by the five imposing seven-foot-tall statues of Renaissance masters—Rembrandt, Rubens, Phidias, Raphael, and Michelangelo—that stand guard along its front façade. Originally built as a Regency-style mansion for Alexander Telfair around eighteen-twenty, the structure occupies the site where Georgia’s colonial royal governors once resided. Its transformation into a public institution began with the will of Mary Telfair, the last heir to the family fortune, who bequeathed her home and personal wealth to the Georgia Historical Society to foster art education in Savannah.
