Monterey Square

Monterey Square is distinguished by the fifty-five-foot marble and granite monument to General Casimir Pulaski that anchors its center. Laid out in eighteen forty-seven, the square commemorates the American victory at the Battle of Monterrey during the Mexican-American War, a tribute fueled by the return of a local military unit, the Irish Jasper Greens. The sculptor Robert Eberhard Launitz specifically selected this site for the Pulaski memorial, rejecting other locations because he feared taller surrounding buildings would dwarf the stature of the monument.
