The Old Sorrel-Weed House Museum & Tours

The Old Sorrel-Weed House commands attention on the northern edge of Madison Square with its grand, two-story Greek Revival portico and massive Corinthian columns. Built between eighteen thirty-five and eighteen forty by the architect Charles Cluskey, the mansion served as the residence for Francis Sorrel, a prominent shipping merchant of French and Haitian descent. At ten thousand square feet, it was one of the largest private homes in Savannah, designed to display the immense wealth and social aspirations of the city’s antebellum elite.
