Fifteen Christopher Street is marked by its history as the home of the Oscar Wilde Memorial Bookshop. Founded by Craig Rodwell in nineteen seventy-three, this storefront was the first bookstore in the United States dedicated specifically to gay and lesbian authors. Rodwell, who was a prominent activist and member of the Mattachine Society, established the shop to provide a dedicated space for LGBTQ literature and community gathering.
