The Robert William Roper House at nine East Battery is distinguished by a monumental, two-story portico supported by five massive Ionic columns. Built in eighteen thirty-eight for a wealthy cotton planter, the residence was the first private home constructed on this stretch of the harbor. Robert W. Roper specifically positioned his house so that it would be the first grand landmark visible to travelers arriving in Charleston by sea.
