The Nathaniel Russell House is defined by the large initials N R visible in the black ironwork of the balcony railing above the front entrance. Completed in eighteen oh eight, this Federal-style townhouse was built for Nathaniel Russell, a prosperous merchant who arrived in Charleston from Rhode Island. He amassed significant wealth through trade and the buying and selling of enslaved people, eventually commissioning this residence to match his status in the city.
