The Unitarian Churchyard is defined by its wild, untamed aesthetic, where thickets of native greenery, moss-draped branches, and climbing vines grow freely over and through the historic headstones. Tucked away on Archdale Street, this garden-style cemetery presents a sharp contrast to the strictly manicured landscapes typically found throughout Charleston. It was developed in the eighteen thirties by Caroline Howard Gilman, who modeled the space after Mount Auburn Cemetery in Massachusetts to create a peaceful, park-like sanctuary for the living.
