Heyward-Washington House

The Heyward-Washington House is a three-story brick double house distinguished by its massive, nearly square frame and a low-pitched hipped roof. Built in seventeen seventy-two, this Georgian structure was the town home of Thomas Heyward, Junior, a South Carolina signer of the Declaration of Independence. Heyward, a patriot leader who served in the militia, was captured by the British in seventeen eighty and held as a prisoner of war until his exchange the following year.
