The Gibbes Museum of Art is a Beaux Arts building, identifiable by its classical stone facade, prominent pedimented windows, and the decorative Tiffany-style dome that rises above the structure. It stands on Meeting Street as a monument to the vision of James Shoolbred Gibbes. In his eighteen eighty-eight will, Gibbes provided one hundred thousand dollars to the City of Charleston specifically to build a hall for the exhibition of paintings and instruction in the fine arts.
