The Charleston Museum

The Charleston Museum occupies a large, low-slung brick building on Meeting Street that houses the history of the South Carolina Lowcountry. Established by the Charleston Library Society on January 12, 1773, it is widely recognized as America’s first museum. Its early collections were inspired by the British Museum and were initially intended to document the natural history of the region.
