St John's Lutheran Church

religious

St. John’s Lutheran Church on Clifford Street is defined by its rectangular, stuccoed brick exterior and an Italianate steeple that rises with a distinctive bell-shaped roof. Dedicated in eighteen eighteen, the building is the mother church of Lutheranism in South Carolina. The congregation traces its formal organization back to seventeen fifty-five, when early members gathered to worship in the French Huguenot Church before completing their own initial wooden building in seventeen sixty-four.
