Dock Street Theatre

The Dock Street Theatre is recognizable by the sandstone columns and an intricate cast-iron balcony on its Church Street facade. It occupies the site of the first building in the thirteen colonies constructed exclusively for theatrical performances, which opened on February twelfth, seventeen thirty-six, with the play The Recruiting Officer. That original structure was lost to the Great Fire of seventeen forty, and the current building rose on the spot in eighteen oh nine as the Planter’s Hotel.
