Philadelphia Alley

Philadelphia Alley is a narrow, quiet pedestrian passage connecting Queen and Cumberland Streets, hidden between the busier blocks of Church and State. Originally a private footpath created in the mid-eighteenth century by a merchant named Francis Kinloch, it served as a cramped access route for rental tenements behind his home. Before it took its current name, locals knew it as Kinloch’s Court or simply Cow Alley, a name born from the cattle driven through the gap toward the city’s old beef market.
