The Edmondston-Alston House at twenty-one East Battery is the only historic residence along this harbor-front promenade that offers a direct, elevated view of the water from its iconic third-story piazza. Built in eighteen twenty-five by Scottish shipping merchant Charles Edmondston, the house was constructed on land that once held the ruins of a colonial-era fortification known as Fort Mechanic. It remains a distinct landmark here for the Alston family coat of arms mounted upon its rooftop parapet, a unique feature among the mansions lining this seawall.
