Waterfront Park stretches for eight acres along the Cooper River, marked by a stone and bronze fountain shaped like a massive pineapple. This park occupies a site that served as a center for Charleston’s maritime traffic for generations, containing wharves and shipping terminals until a nineteen fifty-five fire left the area in decline. By the late nineteen seventies, the waterfront had become a collection of gravel parking lots and charred pilings before Mayor Joseph P. Riley Junior led the effort to reclaim the land.
