The Powder Magazine on Cumberland Street is a small, square, single-story brick structure distinguished by a steep pyramidal roof and walls that measure three feet in thickness. Completed in seventeen thirteen, it is the oldest surviving public building in South Carolina. Its design was a matter of survival for a colonial city facing constant threats from the Spanish, French, and pirates.
