St. Philip's Church

St. Philip's Church on Church Street is distinguished by its tower and steeple that project into the roadway, forcing the street to curve around the building. This architectural choice followed an eighteenth-century dispute between the vestry and city officials who wanted to widen the road. The church leaders successfully argued that a steeple offered more ornamental value to the city than a wider street.
