First Baptist Church, Capitol Hill

First Baptist Church, Capitol Hill, stands at six twenty-five Rosa L. Parks Boulevard as a brick edifice that houses one of Tennessee’s oldest African American congregations. The church traces its roots to eighteen thirty-four, when black congregants at Nashville's First Baptist Church received permission to hold separate prayer meetings. By eighteen forty-eight, they established the First Colored Baptist Mission, eventually gaining formal independence and their own property deed in eighteen sixty-five.
