War Memorial Auditorium

The War Memorial Auditorium is distinguished by a row of massive, fluted Doric columns that frame a central courtyard. Built in nineteen twenty-five, the structure serves as a monument to the three thousand, four hundred Tennesseans who lost their lives during the First World War. Architect Edward Dougherty designed the memorial to include an office block and a two-thousand-seat performance hall, with the names of the fallen inscribed on tablets within the courtyard. A heroic bronze statue by Belle Kinney and Leopold Scholz, titled Youth, stands in the center of that space, holding a figure of Nike in its palm.
