The Downtown Presbyterian Church is marked by its bold Egyptian Revival architecture, featuring dramatic lotus columns and a winged sun disk that distinguish it from any other building on the street. Completed in eighteen fifty-one, this is the third sanctuary to stand on this site after fires claimed its two predecessors. Designed by William Strickland, the same architect responsible for the Tennessee State Capitol, the building is a rarity in American church design for its deliberate use of Egyptian motifs to create a space that feels like an ancient temple.
