Oakwood Cemetery is the oldest municipal burial ground in Austin, occupying forty acres on a hill just east of Interstate thirty-five. Established in eighteen thirty-nine, the same year the city was founded, the site grew from an initial ten-acre plot into a final resting place for over twenty-three thousand people. Among the graves are five Texas governors, early pioneers, and notable figures like educator Annie Webb Blanton and Texas Ranger John Barclay Armstrong.
