The Texas Capitol Visitors Center sits on the southeast corner of the Capitol grounds inside a three-story building that resembles a medieval castle. Built between eighteen fifty-six and eighteen fifty-seven, this structure is the oldest surviving state government office building in Austin. Its architect, a German immigrant named Christoph Conrad Stremme, designed the headquarters for the General Land Office using limestone rubble covered in stucco and scored to look like cut stone.
